“One Zen word, one enlightenment” by En corporation

Zen words are master’s invent to give hints to disciple as a chance of spiritual awakening.

En will help your enlightenment (?) by giving you a short explanation of Zen words.

Today’s word is “三級浪高魚化龍” (Sankyu Nami Takoshite Uo Ryu To Kasu).

“Fishes which swim up a three-stage waterfall become dragons.”

This phrase is based on a legend recorded in Houhan Shu (The History of the Late Han Dynasty)of China. When Yu who was a legendary emperor of Xia Dynasty executed flood prevention for the Yellow River, a three-stage waterfall was created at Longmen mountains. A lot of fish tried to swim up the waterfall but only carp could finish and thus became dragons. It teaches that there is a state of mind which only those who practised hard could reach.

Japanese custom of decorating Koinobori or carp streamer for Boy’s Day celebration in May to wish for the healthy growth of boys is based on this legend.

This scroll is often hanged in May or at tea ceremony to celebrate birth, success in life, or promotion.
